新概念第四册44课第三行有一句话很奇怪：Traditional custom,taken the world over,is a mass of detailed behavior more astonishing than what any one person can ever evolve in individual actions.
taken the world over肯定是做custom的后置定语了,可是在这句定语中,很明显是表示“从世界范围来看的传统习俗”,按理应该是taking the world over啊!用taking的话,可以理解为施动者是custom.如果用taken,那么施动者是谁呢?
我们知道,用过去分词作后置定语时表示被动含义,如果该句的take over词组还原成相应的定语从句——Traditional custom that is taken the world over is ……,很明显无法翻译.难道要译成“被接管了世界的习俗是……”吗?书中的意思,很明显是“接管了世界的习俗”,即“为世界所接受的、世界范围的习俗”.因此,我认为应该用现在分词作后置定语.
希望有多年经验的同行解答.并附带例句,
take over的主语只能是人或者有人组成的团体或者部门,比如政府、军队,公司等.而Traditional custom作take over肯定是不行的,所以用taken over.而该句中take over的主语不是 the world,the world只是表示Traditional custom被承袭,传播的范围,take over的主语被省略了,你可以理解为主语是we hunman beings.被动语态中省略主语是很常见的.
关于类似的例句：Despite a range of measures taken over the years,Beijing's air remains perpetually smoggy.尽管近几年采取了一系列的措施,但是北京的空气仍然很差.
