New York's finest matchmaker meets his match in this Will Smith romantic comedy,also starring Eva Mendes and US TV star Kevin James
"With no guile and no game,there's no girl!" It's something Alfie might say,and the shadow of Michael Caine's Cockney lothario looms large over Will Smith's first stab at romantic comedy.The erstwhile Man In Black plays Alex Hitchens,aka Hitch,a cool "date doctor" who promises every client he can find them a girlfriend in three attempts or less."Three dates,gentlemen; after that you're on your own," he crows.But our hero is far less cocksure when it comes to his own love life - especially when he meets Sara Melas (Mendes),a tabloid gossip columnist who shares his attitude towards modern relationships.
This is not the most difficult scenario to establish,which makes it weird that director Andy Tennant (Ever After,Sweet Home Alabama) takes so long to set it up.Indeed,Smith spends so much of the opening third talking directly to camera you half think you've stumbled into 'The Office'.Luckily the film hits its stride with the introduction of Albert Brennaman (James),a tubby lawyer who seeks Hitch's aid in wooing glamorous socialite Allegra Cole (Valletta).Hitch dutifully arranges a date for this unlikely duo.This piques the interest of Sara,who has no idea that the handsome man she's seeing and the mysterious matchmaker she's trying to identify are one and the same.Sara's sceptical of Hitch's motivations,and with good reason.After all,he's basically a pimp who gets guys laid,albeit a classier more socially acceptable one than your average procurer.
Smith tries hard to conceal his character's misogynist streak,but it's evident in every piece of "expert" advice and self-justification.Hardly surprising,then,that the film is hijacked by the roly-poly James,a sitcom star in the US who grabs his first big-screen role and turns it into a scene-stealing showcase.Will has his moments; hell,there are times he's almost charming.But it must be galling that a movie meant to usher in the next stage of his career has instead become the launching pad for someone else's.Verdict
An overlong but nonetheless enjoyable date movie.
