她是一个黑人女裁缝,因为在亚拉巴马州（Alabama）蒙哥马利（Montgomery）市的城市公交车上拒绝向一名白人男子让座,该事件最终神话般引发了美国50-60年代的黑人民权运动.神话的女主角Rosa Parks,05年在底特律（Detroit）的家中去世,享年92岁.
底特律前市长Dennis W.Archer已经证实了Rosa Parks的死讯.
Parks太太因为无视当时的种族隔离制度而被拘捕,在被判违反了隔离法后,被判罚款10美圆,外加4美圆的诉讼费.作为回应,蒙哥马利市的黑人市民向最高法院提出上诉,状告Jim Crow法案违宪——该法案规定他们在公交系统中,只能乘坐二等座,同时拒绝乘坐公交车长达13个月之久.
这件开始于1955年冬天的公交车事件,开始引起了全美国人民的关注,同时使得一名叫马丁·路德·金（Martin Luther King Jr）的传教士开始转向黑人民权运动并且最终成为运动领袖——这就是金博士,蒙哥马利市Dexter Avenue Baptist教堂新来的牧师.金博士开始组建蒙哥马利进步协会（Montgomery Improvement Association）,并形成了黑人民权斗争运动的雏形.
“Parks太太被拘捕并非反抗的原因,这件事情只是引子”金博士在他的 《向自由前行（Stride Toward Freedom）》书中写到,“反抗的原因在于类似的不公的普遍性.”
Parks太太的反抗行为,现在看起微不足道,但是在当时的亚拉巴马州,这却是十分危险的行为,甚至可以算是一件不计后果的行为.因为拒绝让出作为,她除了吃官司以外甚至可能会被殴打,但是她的行为影响最终超出了市政当局所能控制的范围.Parks太太向人们——远非仅仅蒙哥马利市市民而已,证明了隔离法案有多么的残酷而且生而耻辱.
在那时那刻,Cleveland 大道公交车也使得这么一位平凡黑人女子突然成为种族平等诉求的象征和先行者,此后,种族平等诉求运动日渐成熟壮大.
