Television is developing fast in the world today, and watching TV has become part of our daily life. While watching TV plays an important part in our life, we should not shut our eyes to its unfavorable effects on people's life. On the whole, however, the advantages of watching TV outweigh the disadvantages of watching TV.
The advantages of watching TV are self-evident. In the first place, watching TV can significantly increase our knowledge. Television stations offer many knowledge programs on TV. When we watch such programs, we may learn new things about the world. In addition, watching TV keeps us abreast of the latest developments in domestic and world affairs. Second, watching TV is a beneficiary entertainment if we watch it in moderation. When people get back home from their work, they need to be relaxed. Watching TV can be an effective way of relieving them of their fatigue and pressure felt in the workplace when they watch interesting programs, laughing in agreement. Third, as TV is a multi-media means of communication, it may help viewers acquire new information more easily. TV is different from radio or newspapers and magazines in that it provides integrated effects of sound, light, and pictures when it demonstrates a thing for you to understand
However, the disadvantages of watching TV are undeniable. First, indulgence in it will be bad for health. Some televiewers seem to be addicted to television. Football fans, for example, tend to watch games far into the night, being listless the next day. Second, as passive televiewers, we are likely to fail in self-cultivation if we watch TV for long as a habit, neglecting others ways of knowing things. As a matter of fact, watching TV does not cause you to learn things on your own initiative. It is hard to imagine that you can become a learned man if you only watch TV without reading good books in earnest. No matter how fanciful TV programs are, watching TV cannot take place of reading books. Third, watching TV may cause an estrangement between family members. TV fans, who immerse themselves in soap operas and other favorites, may lack profound emotional exchanges with their family. It is now commonplace that the whole family start to watch TV after supper, without chatting intimately, as they did in those old years, and they even watch TV in separate rooms. Such families actually lack adequate communication.
With all these disadvantages, we must acknowledge the great role television plays in our modern life. What we need to do is to step up research into the influence of TV on social life and give correct guidance to televiewers as to moderate entertainment. In so doing, we can give full play to the advantages of watching TV and overcome those disadvantages.
